The Regulations

The Fifth Sergey Taneyev International Competition of Chamber Ensembles (further named the “Competition”) will be held in the city of Kaluga, Russia, from the 25^th until the 30^th of November, 2014.

The First Round of the Competition will be the auditions of the ensembles’ recordings. The Second and Third Rounds will be held at the Concert Hall of the Kaluga Region Philharmonics. A Competition for the Tatyana Gaydamovich Special Award will be held at the Concert Hall of the Sergey Taneyev Music College of the Kaluga Region. Final concerts of the Competition laureates will be held at the Concert Hall of the Kaluga Region Philharmonics and at the Sergey Rachmaninoff Hall of Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.

The Competition will be held in the following four nominations:
I. Piano Duo (two grand pianos)
II. Piano Trio (violin, cello, piano)
III. Piano Quartet (violin, viola, cello, piano)
IV. Piano Quintet (two violins, viola, cello, piano)
The deadline for submission of the applications will be the 1^st of September, 2014.

Procedure for the Application Submission

Only those persons who are born after the 1^st of November, 1974 and before the 1^st of November, 1998 may participate in the Competition.

The following documents must be submitted for participation in the Competition:
1) the filled-out application;
2) copy of the front page of the passport (or another ID) with the photo and personal data;
3) copies of the documents confirming the music education of every performer of the ensemble;
4) history and an entire repertoire of the ensemble;
5) description of the ensemble’s program for each Round, including the following details: full name of the composer; title, key, opus number, duration of the piece performed; titles of its movements (if any);
6) one color artistic photograph of the ensemble for the Competition booklet (10 x 15 cm, *.jpg, 300 dpi minimum);
7) an audio (CD) and a video (DVD) recording of the ensemble’s program for the First Round.
The competitors who are citizens of Russia must additionally submit:
8) copy of the passport page with the stamp proving their permanent residence registration;
9) copy of the taxpayer’s identification number;
10) copy of the State Pension Insurance Certificate.

The application form must be filled out either on computer or with printed letters handwritten, in Russian or in English.

All originals and copies of the documents, together with the CD and DVD, must be forwarded by registered mail at the International Cultural Center: 10 Mantulinskaya Street, Moscow, 123100, Russia; the envelope must have a mark: “The Taneyev Competition.” Both the filled-out application and the ensemble photo must be forwarded at: icf.moscow@gmail.com. The registration fee shall be paid out upon arrival of the ensemble at the Competition, prior to the draw procedure. The amount of the registration fee shall be:
• for an ensemble from Russia or any CIS country — 4200 rubles;
• for an ensemble from any other country — 100 euros.

Procedure for Holding the Competition

The recordings for the First Round will be auditioned by the Russian jurors of the Competition. Not later than the 10^th of September, 2014, an official invitation will be forwarded to the ensembles that are allowed to participate in the Second Round. In case of necessity, the scores of Sergey Taneyev’s chamber pieces included into the Competition Program will be forwarded to the participants of the Second Round.

Both the Second and Third Rounds will be held publicly. The order of performances will be determined by the draw and will not be changed until the end of the Competition. The names and awards of each ensemble that wins the Competition will be announced after the open vote by the Competition Jury.

A separate competition for the Tatyana Gaydamovich Special Award will be held during the time period between the Second and Third Rounds. Its total duration shall not exceed thirty minutes. A chamber piece by any nineteenth-twenty-first-century Russian composer may be performed. Any ensembles, regardless of whether or not they are allowed to participate in the Third Round of the Competition, may be auditioned upon their desire.

The Prizes

The Fifth Sergey Taneyev International Competition of Chamber Ensembles shall announce the following prizes:
1) First Prize in the amount of 180,000 rubles and the laureate title;
2) Second Prize in the amount of 120,000 rubles and the laureate title;
3) Third Prize in the amount of 90,000 rubles and the laureate title;
4) Fourth Prize in the amount of 45,000 rubles and the laureate title;
5) Fifth Prize in the amount of 24,000 rubles and the laureate title;
6) three honorary diplomas with the cost of 9,000 rubles each, together with three diploma winner titles respectively;
7) The Tatyana Gaydamovich Special Award in the amount of 45,000 rubles.

All the prizes will be paid in rubles and are subject to taxation in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.
Ensembles not allowed to participate in the Third Round will be awarded with honorary certificates.
The jury’s decisions are irrevocable and may not be subject to argument.

The jury may, by their special decision:
1) award not all the prizes;
2) award one prize to several ensembles;
3) in case some prize is not awarded, the amounts of the awarded prizes may be increased proportionally to the amount of the prize that is not awarded.

Financial Terms

All expenses of the competitors during their presence at the Competition must be paid out either by the participating ensembles themselves or by their home institutions. In accordance with the norms of per diem expenses determined by the legislation of the Russian Federation, the Competition organizers will cover the accommodation expenses and meals for the ensembles that will be allowed to participate in the Third Round, as well as will render assistance to both the participating ensembles and persons accompanying them with the hotel booking and an access to the Competition events.

The Language Clause

In case any arguments are raised with regard to the interpretation of these Regulations, the Russian text published on the Moscow Conservatory’s website shall have a priority.

First Round

Third Round

1) S. Taneyev. Prelude and Fugue G-sharp minor, op. 29. Author’s version for two pianos (1914)
2) S. Taneyev. Symphony No. 4, op. 12 (four movements). Author’s version for piano four hands (may be performed on two pianos)
3) Any piece composed after 1980 (not longer than twenty minutes)

II. The Nomination Piano Trio

First Round

IV. The Nomination Piano Quintet

First Round

R. Schumann. Quintet E-flat major, op. 44 (four movements)

Second Round

2) Piece(s) by a national composer of the ensemble’s country

Total duration of the Second Round must not exceed forty minutes.*

Third Round

1) S. Taneyev. Quintet G minor, op. 30 (four movements)
2) Any piece composed after 1980 (not longer than twenty minutes)

During the time period between the Second and Third Rounds, a separate Competition for the Tatyana Gaydamovich Special Award will be held. Its total duration shall not exceed thirty minutes. A chamber piece by any nineteenth-twenty-first-century Russian composer may be performed. Any ensembles, regardless of whether or not they are allowed to participate in the Third Round of the Competition, may be auditioned upon their desire.

* Following the jury’s decision to be announced prior to the beginning of the audition, the program may be shortened within the offered time limit.
