Karol Józef Lipiński

Karol Józef Lipiński was a Polish violinist and composer, a specialist in musical folklore. He studied music with his father, Felix Lipiński. From 1810 he was the conductor of the Opera Theater in Lwów. He toured throughout Italy (where in 1818 he competed in performance with Niccolò Paganini), frequently in various Russian cities (his first Russian tour taking place in 1819) and in various countries of Western Europe. In 1839-1859 he was the soloist and concertmaster of the Dresden Opera orchestra. He was one of the most outstanding virtuosos and chamber performers of the classical trend. Among his students were Joseph Böhm and Joseph Joachim. He composed numerous works for violin, including 4 concertos for violin and orchestra, variations, fantasies, dances and other works, transcriptions for violin of piano works by Chopin, and also three Polonaises for piano and arrangements of folk songs.
